Capital Blend is an all-female a cappella group based in the DC area that has been going strong since 2008. They are a group of women who come from all walks of life and range in age from 23 to thirtysomething. Vocal Percussionists: Perform...
VoCALnation has a surprise once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for vocal percussionists at this year's festival. Rather than bringing in their own percussionist, Groove for Thought approached the VCN production team with an offer to hold an audition to select a vocal percussionist from the attendees at this year's festival! The individual selected will get the opportunity to perform with Groove for Thought as their vocal percussionist during the Professional Showcase on Saturday, July 20th, 2013. Additionally, they will participate in Groove for Thought's pre-show sound check and will be announced publicly at the concert and on the VCN website and social media during the festival (not to mention adding a great cred to their ...More
Showcase Performers Announced
The passes have been purchased, videos recorded and submitted, and the selection panel has deliberated. It is now time to officially announce our featured performers for VoCALnation 2013! We received submissions from CAL groups as close to the festival as down the street to as far away as Iowa. The videos submitted were nothing short of impressive, and the competition at the top was extremely tight. We guarantee that both the Friday night's Contemporary A Cappella League Showcase and Saturday night's Professional Showcase are going to provide audiences some of the best post-collegiate a cappella singing in the country. Without further ado, here are our featured performers! Professional Showcase - Saturday, July 20th, 2013, 8 PM. Fermata Town - ...More
CAL Group Highlight:...
Jay Mednikow is the founder of CAL group DeltaCappella in Memphis, TN. DeltaCappella hosted the CAL Symposium in 2009, an event which was the predecessor for VoCALnation. How was your group formed? I had a dream to sing collegiate-style a cappella again, long after graduating college. As recently as 2006, there were very few post-collegiate groups that sang in the collegiate style anywhere, and none in Memphis. Post-collegiate a cappella groups at the time were generally composed of four to six singers, one mic per singer, and invariably in those circumstances, only the best singers would pursue a cappella after college. I'm not the best voice in DeltaCappella, and I didn't ...More
Tweetchat June 19th 9pm EST:...
All of us at VoCAL Nation are so excited to announce that we will be hosting our very first tweet chat! We know (and love) how active our community is on social media, so we thought it would be great to get everyone together at the same time and really get a dialogue started. With the flood of recent college graduates interested in continue singing and VoCAL Nation just over a month away, we think there’s no better topic for our first chat that How to join/start a CAL group? The tweet chat will take place on Wednesday, June 19th starting at 9pm EST, and will feature Jim Diego from ...More

We knew that it was time to re-energize this exciting part of the CASA festivals and find ways to involve more than a small group of people. But first, there are many things we aren't changing: The Collaborative Recording will still include the headlining professional group from the festival. It will also include some of the top groups included in the festival and some talented individual singers. The session is still about finding ways to collaborate and produce something innovative while supporting the mission of CASA to enhance the a cappella community and the experience of attendees at our festivals. Our changes are all to get more people involved in this incredible experience. What ...More
VoCALnation is CAL-ling YOU!
It’s only been one week since the BOSS [Boston Sings] festival and I’m already having withdrawals. Three days of pure a cappella goodness and I’m craving more. I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more a cappella... in the form of a cowbell sound? You get the point – these festivals are addicting and I can’t wait for the next one on the CASA calendar which happens to be VoCALnation in Philadelphia this July. As the founding member of Fermata Town, one of the newest groups to join the Contemporary A Cappella League (CAL), it’s easy for me to say that there is so much value in these festivals ...More
From Boston to Philly –...
Boston Sings 2013 was my second time at a CASA festival. Before attending, I was excited about getting to meet even more people in person that I had already collected as Facebook friends. I had looked over the workshop list and saw a few I was interested in, but wasn't too jazzed about that. I looked over the list of competing collegiate groups and was excited about seeing Voices In Your Head in particular. I was impressed by the tracks I had heard by POSTYR Project and was intrigued to see how they would do it live. Just before the festival began, CASA Director of Education Ben Stevens stated on ...More
Meet Your Hosts: KeyStone
Contemporary A Cappella - all the camaraderie of a live music group combined with the artistry of all-vocal performance and the energy of contemporary music. It's where the addiction to close harmony singing meets the modern music so many of us grew up with. That addiction is what brought KeyStone A Cappella together and how we became your hosts for VoCALnation. As undergraduates, some of us sang together in the a cappella groups at Penn State University. Others sang in groups at Temple University and Oberlin. It was actually post-college that the six of us got together. We all found our way to The A Cappella Project - Philadelphia, a non-profit ...More
2013 Call for Instructors
To be considered as a workshop leader and/or masterclinician for VoCALnation 2013 (19-21 July), complete the application form by Friday 22 March . We welcome proposals for workshops on any aspect of a cappella music: from technique and arrangement through performance and recording to history and criticism. Especially welcome are proposals which, regardless of particular topic, address the interests and needs of groups in the Contemporary A cappella League (CAL). You will be notified of our decision by Friday 5 April. If the decision is positive, you will be asked to submit title and workshop description, any AV requests, a first draft of any materials for your workshop, and your brief biography ...More
