Submission Guidelines

VCN 2013 Performance Submission Guidelines

Attention all post-collegiate a cappella groups: we are currently accepting video submissions from CAL groups to perform in the Friday Night CAL Showcase and as opening acts for Groove for Thought in the Saturday Night Professional Showcase Concert.

A panel of impartial a cappella professionals will select two CAL groups from the eligible video submissions to sing on Saturday night. They will also choose six CAL groups to perform in the Friday Showcase, hosted by KeyStone A Cappella. Selections will be made based on musicality (blend, tuning, use of dynamics), song choice and interpretation/creativity of arrangements, general stage presence, confidence, and consistency of performance.

In order to apply for a Friday or Saturday performance opportunity, your entire group must purchase the All-Access Weekend Pass to VCN 2013 and also submit an audition video by June 5, 2013. The first group to purchase early bird tickets for their entire membership (before June 1, 2013) is GUARANTEED a spot to sing on Friday night; this group will also remain eligible to be selected for a Saturday night performance instead if they submit a video.

Groups who are not selected by the judges to perform will have one more chance to win a slot! Keep an eye on the VCN 2013 Blog for details!

How to Apply

There are three components to a complete application: an audition video, group CAL membership, and the purchase of tickets to VCN 2013 by ALL group members. All components must be submitted electronically by 11:59 pm EST on June 5. Please note that early bird pricing ends June 1.

PART I: Audition video

Make a video recording of your group performing three songs in ten minutes or less. Upload it to YouTube as an unlisted video (instructions here). You will be asked to provide the unlisted URL…

Your video must be labeled in YouTube with your group name and the date of recording, as well as the following information about each song in your set: song name, original artist, soloist, arranger, and any other special performers (vocal percussionist, etc). Recordings must be made after January 1, 2013.

You may record all three songs separately, but if you do so, please edit them together so that you provide us with only one link to your audition. Do not stop or edit within a song; we want to see a truly live performance! Please limit your audition video to a total of ten minutes in length. You do not need to sing what you intend to sing in the concert; this is just a chance for you to show us what you can do!

Email your unlisted YouTube links to Executive Producer Tom West at by the deadline.

PARTS II & III: CAL Membership and Early-Bird Weekend Passes

If your group is not currently a member of the Contemporary A Cappella League, you will need to join before buying your tickets. Send an email to expressing your intentions to begin the process.

In order to complete the application process to be considered for the premium performance spots at VoCALnation, current CAL member groups must have all of your group members purchase a General Seating All-Access Weekend Pass before the Early Bird deadline. When purchasing tickets, be sure to indicate your group affiliation where indicated and select “yes” for the performance opportunity.

Feel free to contact the VCN team if you have any questions on the submission procedures or content of your video. Good luck!
